What You'll Need to Get your Connecticut DMV Driver License
You'll need the following documents to get your Connecticut driver's license:
- (2) Proofs of identity - at least (1) from Primary Documents
- Social Security Number
- Proof of Residency
- Legal Presence in the U.S. - (for Non-U.S. born)
- Name Change documents (if applicable)
- A fully completed R-229 form application
- The CS-1 Driver Education Certificate - original document

Connecticut DMV Driver License: What You'll Do
- Step 1: Apply for a Learner's Permit
- Go on-line to make your Learner's Permit Test Appointment
- Pay all the required fees ( fees are paid online when your appointment is scheduled)
- Study the Driver's Manual for the learner's permit knowledge test
- Bring the following to your test appointment
- All of your original documents from the checklist
- A copy of your appointment verification
- Pass a vision test and 25-question knowledge test for the permit
- Go on-line to make your Learner's Permit Test Appointment
- Step 2: Take an 8-hour Safe Driving Practices Course
- You can take it at any time, but you must take it before taking the on-the-road skills test
- It can be taken through a commercial or secondary driving school
- Step 3: Take an On-the-Road Skills Test (after holding your permit for the required amount of time - 90 Days prior to exam)
- Schedule a Road Test Appointment Online
- Bring the following to your road test appointment
- A print-out of your road test appointment confirmation page
- A fully completed R-229 form application
- Your learner's permit
- A properly registered and insured vehicle
- Valid Motor Vehicle Registration Certificate
- Connecticut Insurance card

- Under 18 Applicants: Your qualified trainer must be present at the DMV office and sign a form attesting that all driver education/practice driving requirements have been fulfilled

Step 4: Pass the skills test and receive your new license in the mail
Caveats and Exceptions to Getting your Connecticut Driver License
- Provide valid/unexpired, original documents, or certified copies. Photocopies, notarized photocopies, non-certified copies, and damaged or mutilated documents are not acceptable. DMV will scan and store images of all documents.

- Road testing is offered at the following DMV offices: Bridgeport , Danbury , Enfield , Hamden , Old Saybrook , Waterbury , Wethersfield and Willimantic .
- Individuals arriving in the U.S. with an I-94 stamp in your passport must visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website www.cbp.gov/I94 to obtain a hard copy of your I-94 document. This document must be presented to the DMV along with all other required documents.
- You will not receive a learner's permit or permanent driver license at a DMV office. It will arrive through the mail. After visiting an office, you can track the delivery of your new card.
