Smartphones can be a substitute for almost everything. One such use case is to use them as baby monitors. If you have some spare devices laying around the house, you can actually turn these into baby monitors that will alert you when your child is crying. There are only a few apps that can do this really well so here are the best baby monitor apps for Android.

The best baby monitor apps for Android

  • AtHome Camera
  • BabyCam
  • Baby Monitor 3G
  • Dormi
  • WiFi Baby Monitor

AtHome Camera

Price: Free / $0.99 with in-app purchases

AtHome Camera is a home surveillance system. It turns your smartphone into a camera. The stream is viewable from other smartphones or computers. It comes with a motion sensor feature. You get notifications upon activation of the motion sensor. Thus, it only bugs you if it detects something happening. Otherwise, you just set up the connections and that's it. The app is free to download and use. They ask for a $0.99 in-app purchase to remove ads. There is also a store for standalone cameras if you want to go that route. It makes for one of the better baby monitor apps.

BabyCam is a simple, cheap solution for baby monitor apps. It doesn't require an account for set up and the premium version goes for only $0.99. The app lets you connect to your Wi-Fi and view your baby's room from other parts of the house. This, of course, needs a second device for setup so hopefully you have an old phone laying around. The app lets you listen to the baby, talk to the baby, and even active the phone flash to see the room in the dark. There aren't a lot of complaints, honestly. It does what it says it does. The only precaution we'd take is making sure the device in your baby's room is plugged in to avoid battery drain.

Baby Monitor 3G is a fairly stable baby monitor app. You need two devices, one for the baby and one for the parent. You link them up and they function as your usual baby monitor. It boasts support over networks as old as 3G and that's good news. In addition, the app has alarms, quick connections, live video, and you can have it activate on any noise from the baby's room. The data connection over 3G or LTE means you can check on your baby from literally anywhere if you need it. The app has a free trial if you want to play with it a bit, but the full version goes for $4.99.

Dormi is one of the most popular baby monitor apps. It features adjustable sensitivity. That way you don't get notifications unless the baby really starts making noise. It also features baby monitor stats (battery info, etc), customization features, and tons of additional settings. It has a renewable free trial (monthly). The subscription service is good if you need something cheap and quick. However, we recommend the $8.99 single payment. The app hasn't received an update since 2015. We're a bit concerned about that, but it still works well enough on most devices.

WiFi Baby Monitor is one of the simpler baby monitor apps. It works easily enough. Connect two devices to the same WiFi and place one in your baby's room. It'll notify you when something happens. The free version supports voice-only monitoring and most of the features. The paid version adds video, talk back capabilities, encryption, and it removes ads. It's rather new. Thus, there are some bugs with it. However, it's cheap, has no subscriptions, and it worked well during our testing.
